Low Tech activities have been running in the Library for many years. Initially it ran as a lunch-time craft club which was eventually moved to the Makerspace facility for better access to a wider variety of materials, storage and clean up. We have been pleasantly surprised this year with the large number of students participating every Wednesday in spite of our limitations. We have no wet area and limited access to materials given we are working from a temporary space. Low Tech has grown into a much anticipated activity and we as a Library Team have decided to give it a new name rather than the generic Low Tech title.
From Term 2 we will be using the name Cre8tion Hub. As the word suggests a lot of creativity goes on in this space. Every Term activities are planned connected to Library Events, Curriculum themes, Jewish Festivals and yes, some just for fun or skill development. We look forward to launching our Cre8ation Hub officially when we move into our new Library Term 3. In the meantime students can get comfortable with the new name for their creative space.
Low Tech activities are designed for Primary Students to engage in both solo and group activities. We provide a space for the students to come together during lunch with their imagination so they can create something fun, creative, useful or entertaining.
Four primary goals underlying the purpose for the Cre8tion Hub are :
1. Creativity.
2. Development of fine motor skills. We take for granted cutting, drawing, folding, using a ruler and even gluing skills but in today's heavily dominated digital world these skills are not always as utilised as they could be. Low tech gives students the opportunity to use these skills.
3. Group collaboration. Every Term we introduce a group project so students have an opportunity to work together and create a part of a whole. Apart from working together it also teaches students to appreciate the process of creating something rather than the finished product to take home.
4. Link activities to the Library Calendar of Events.
