Fish are crucial to the functioning of ecosystems as well as for human livelihoods and nourishment. Marine fish are the primary food source for approximately 1 billion people and marine fisheries employ about 60 million people. But over the years, over-fishing has left many fish stocks so depleted that they can no longer replace themselves. Currently, 35 percent of global fish stocks are over-fished, a dramatic rise over the 10 percent levels of the 1990’s.
