Across the globe wildlife species face extinction. Each extinction event results in biodiversity loss—the irreversible loss of a unique species and a reduction in the overall variety of life on the planet. Biodiversity loss often follows habitat destruction—for example, through deforestation or desertification. Deforestation is a particularly serious threat to wildlife because forests constitute a major source of biodiversity on land.
